North Carolina Outer Banks Region

The North Carolina Outer Banks is a 200-mile long series of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina.   It is an area rich with history and a popular tourist destination, known for its temperate climate and vast, beautiful sandy beaches.

Several notable events include the birth of the first person of English descent, Virginia Dare, on American soil who mysteriously vanished along with the colony of early English settlers on Roanoke Island in 1587.  The Wright brothers first flight at Kill Devil Hills.  And a large number of shipwrecks off the Outer Banks in an area known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

It's a place where wild horses roam free, deep sea fishing is world-class, and the beauty of nature shines through.  Whether you go to relax or play, the Outer Banks has something for everyone.

Take a few minutes to check out the OBX towns listed on the tabs to the right.  For detailed information, please contact the Visitors Bureau.
